GOALS
The Chair of the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee charts the course that will shape election results in 2026 (and throughout the 2024-2028 cycle).
These are the goals that Vanessa is focusing on.
GOALS FOR THE HCDEC
Voter Engagement
-
Voter Registration and Re-enrollment in VBM
-
Voter Education and Pushing Back on False Information
-
Publish in local papers (LA Gaceta, Florida Sentinel, Creative Loafing, etc.)
-
Provide legitimate resources to help dispel misinformation and disinformation
-
Distribute in print form and digitally in appropriate channels
-
-
Revamp the Precinct & Field approach
-
Year-round organizing (engage voters throughout the year, not just during GOTV)
-
Crowdsource a vibrant GOTV Plan, in writing, while leveraging best practices
-
Enhance our social media presence in non-traditional spaces via video clips (simplify and shorten messaging and stay consistent)
-
More focus on local issues and communities on our social media platforms
-
Seek out opportunities to participate on Podcasts and local Radio shows
Meet Each Community Where They Are
-
Effectively engage to reduce the lack of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) participation
-
Attend community meetings (e.g. neighborhood association, PTA, Chamber of Commerce, etc.)
-
Build relationships with community influencers
-
Host and/or participate in community events where we can engage and listen to concerns
-
Identify and engage with Community organizations as individuals (e.g. Florida Rising, Enterprising Latinas, Equal Ground, NAACP, etc.)
Recruit, Engage and Train Volunteers
-
Interns from the many local colleges/universities to help engage young people
-
Mentor new volunteers
-
Teach organizing and deep canvassing skills
-
Revamp the training programs; record them so they can be viewed anytime
-
Understand and leverage the skill sets of volunteers
Emphasis on ‘In Person’ Business Meetings as a Crucial Component of Authentic Connection and Emotional Investment
-
Have conversations and engage with your fellow precinct captains, as well as presenters, attendees + guests at the meetings
-
It is the obligation of the officers to ensure that each monthly meeting is educational, practical, inspiring, motivating and, if possible, fun in order to boost attendance and productivity (each meeting should be built around a motivational speaker or trainer/teacher, should feel like an ‘event’ worth attending, and should stack information presented like building blocks from meeting to meeting, month to month, year to year - while recognizing that nobody wants to hear the Chair lecture for long stretches)
-
Identify challenges, but then spend the majority of the time on the discussion of solutions, brainstorming and intentionally nurturing consensus
-
Work closely and collaboratively with the Committee Chairs in order to implement the deliverables on the Strategy Document
-
Ensure people who come to the HCDEC feel welcome, heard and supported (volunteers, electeds + donors)
-
Utilize hybrid/Zoom meetings to ensure access and to work in smaller groups effectively
Build Out Fundraising
-
Re-establish faith with donors that we can deliver results in Hillsborough County
-
Work on new sources of funding based on individual relationships and deepening connections throughout our communities
-
Encourage small monthly recurring donations from members and Hillsborough Democrats generally
Implement and Utilize Technology
-
Drawing on my professional experience as a Project Manager and listening to other Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), identify and employ tools that will assist us in reaching our goals (based on demonstrations and member buy in)
